Greenwich Sustainability Committee

Gardeners, environmentalists, cyclists and others interested in sustainability in Greenwich should consider joining the Greenwich Sustainability Committee (GSC).

Formed by the First Selectman in 2020, the GSC aims to coordinate information exchange among the many green groups working in Greenwich and is co-chaired by Selectperson Jill Oberlander and Director of Environmental Affairs Patricia Sesto.

The GSC consists of eight subgroups: Transportation & Air Quality; Buildings & Energy; Water & Land Use; Waste Reduction; Food Systems; Beautification & Quality of Life; PR & Outreach; and Advocacy, Legislative & Policy.

The Committee’s purpose is to work collaboratively to support a cohesive and comprehensive network that will record existing initiatives; identify gaps; recommend actions; advocate and catalyze action; and raise public awareness.

Among the Committee’s early tasks has been supporting the Town’s recertification process with Sustainable CT, endorsement of legislative initiatives like extending the plastic bag ban past its sunset clause and supporting the East-West Bike Route Study, consideration of equity on the committee’s representation, as well as tracking legislation at the state level that promotes sustainable solutions.

Anyone interested in joining or learning more about the committee, please reach out to Jill Oberlander via email at Jill.Oberlander@greenwichct.org
